What Kind of Learning Content Merits a Diploma?
Have you ever wondered why it is, exactly, that college graduates are (purportedly) more qualified than non-college grads to do most jobs? What sort of learning content are we acquiring in college that is supposed to help us excel professionally after we graduate? Dead languages? Calculus? Eastern religions?
As long as students keep being exposed to this type of learning content while not simultaneously being exposed to learning content based on how to handle mortgages, file a tax return, and personal finance, we are missing something. Because if you can recite Eliot’s poetry by heart but can’t figure out how to balance your budget, you might find that you are broke while “the women come and go, talking of Michelangelo.”
