But this effort is all for naught if students still go ahead and copy from published works on the internet. The task of spotting plagiarized work–and proving it as such–is a daunting task indeed. What are some ways you can help prevent your LMS students from plagiarizing?

Mary Hricko, library director at Kent State University, suggests directing and limiting students’ use of the internet for reference materials. Of course, you can’t and shouldn’t prevent your LMS students from using the internet for reference materials. But you can, for example, create a list of sources that students are instructed to use for a given assignment. This allows students to practice proper electronic citing, comparing their quoting and paraphrasing skills with their classmates.
