What are the real benefits of building partnerships in the community to enhance school learning systems? According to Sandra Laursen, a social sciences researcher at the University of Colorado at Boulder, actual data on the prevalence, frequency and quality of such learning systems are scarce.

“The benefits largely seem to be that they develop an interest and enthusiasm for science, and a sense that maybe science isn’t so boring after all,” Laursen said.

According to anecdotal evidence, however, it isn’t simply the students that benefit from such learning systems but also teachers and the experts themselves. Inspired by the ability of the experts to model good science, teachers’ pedagogical styles are often influenced in a dramatic way. And experts–especially retired ones–are able to contribute something meaningful to younger generations and share their experience and knowledge.
